I hate New Years? I’m not even quite sure why. I think it’s the fact that it’s not a real holiday and some people treat it like the be all and end all of occassions. Or maybe it’s because it all seems too rehearsed for me to participate. Some have called me a hypocrite because yes, I was at a New Years party this year but for the record, I refused to countdown and give my sometimes boyfriend a kiss…true story.
Anyways…the point is that I don’t like the party aspect of the holiday but I do like the starting over and making changes aspect of it. Initially, I was going to resolve to be less tolerante of people. Sounds harsh, but really it isn’t. I sometimes feel like I’m far too tolerante of people and it needs to stop. Realistically though, I think this is too ambitious a change. So I’ve decided to take small steps that will ultimately lead me to being a less tolerante person (in a good way). I’ve decided not to say ”sorry” unless I really mean it. Sorry is one of those words that I just overuse and I’m done with it.
This resolution came to mind while I was celebrating New Years with a few friends from college, my sometimes boyfriend, his friend and my lovely ex and the chick he cheated on me with…AWESOME! Anyways, my ex who we will call “those”, approached me and called me on not returning any emails or phone calls as of late. Being the old me, I responded with a, “I’m so sorry, I’ve been so busy, yadda, yadda, yadda”. That’s when it hit me, I am not sorry, I didn’t return his emails or phone calls because you’re a jerk. I came right out and said it…yes, in an assertive tone and all. He was stunned and I was proud of myself. Needless to say, I may have made the party a bit awkward afterward, but hey I stood up for myself…totally worth it, right?
